On the Plot in March: Sowing, Growing & Greenhouses

An update from our allotment team as they tell us what they’ve been getting up to in March.

Spring has officially sprung, and the Grimsby Garden Centre allotment is buzzing with activity as we get ready for another exciting growing season. March has been a month of planting, teamwork, and new beginnings.

Our green-fingered group have been busy sowing the seeds for the season ahead, and there’s plenty of progress to share.

What is the Grimsby Garden Centre allotment?

The Grimsby Garden Centre allotment is all about growing good things – from fruit and veg to confidence and friendships! Being owned by Navigo, we're all about supporting mental health and giving people a chance to enjoy the benefits of gardening in a friendly, relaxed space. Like the garden centre itself, the allotment is all about community, wellbeing, and having positive impact on local people's mental health.

What’s been planted this month?

The allotment team has been hard at work getting plants into the ground. Among the new additions to our garden are:

  • Pac Choi
  • Swiss chard
  • Cabbage and lettuce
  • Wild garlic
  • Raspberries
  • Fruit trees (apple, pear, plum, and cherry)

As well as the planting, we’ve also set up some birdhouses and feeders, which have already attracted a variety of visitors, and Martin has busied himself with building a dead hedge out of branches sticks and twigs which is great for wildlife.

We’ve also been getting ready for the upcoming planting of peas, beetroot, and sweetcorn—just in time for those summer BBQs which we hope to enjoy around our new seating area.

Seeds the day!

We’ve kicked off a seed swap in the tea room, which has already sparked some lively conversations among our volunteers and service users. It’s a great way to share and learn about different plants, and we’re excited to see who grows what over the coming months.

A newer addition to our group, Linda, told us why she started coming to the garden centre and how it’s helped her:

"I started at the garden centre in August 2024 but had to take some time off for my health. It’s been a tough journey, but coming back in February has been so healing for me. Spending time in nature and being able to work at my own pace has made all the difference. It’s not just the gardening that’s helped, but the sense of community here. Being part of the team has really boosted my confidence, and I feel like I’m getting back to my old self. I’m so grateful for this place and the people who’ve supported me along the way." Greenhouse progress
We’re also thrilled to announce the completion of our new greenhouse. Volunteers, Skye and Louis did a fantastic job setting it up, with help from the team and staff members who pitched in to prepare the site and secure the structure to the concrete base. The greenhouse will be a real asset to the allotment allowing us to grow more tender plants.

Looking ahead
As we look ahead to April and the warmer months, the allotment team is excited to continue planting and preparing for the new season. There’s plenty more to come, from tending to our fruit trees to watching our seeds sprout into full-grown plants.

Stay tuned for next month’s update, where we’ll share more about the growth of our plants, our ongoing projects, and of course, more stories from our team.
