On the Plot – May: carrots, wildflowers and what’s next
May brought us another bright and busy update from the allotment, where things are really starting to take shape.
Louis gave us a proper tour this month and walked us through what’s been happening on the plot – and it’s safe to say there’s plenty going on.
The raised beds, made from recycled boxes, are full of promise with rows of carrots already coming through. There’s a lovely little herb bed too, quietly doing its thing, while the potatoes are happily tucked up in their pots, soaking up the sunshine.
What is the Grimsby Garden Centre allotment?
One area of the plot has been claimed by Martin and his wildflower area – he’s very protective of it, and rightly so! There’s a real buzz around it already (bees included). Martin also has plans to craft an extension to his natural fence, with some willow which we think will really bring some character to the space.
Fruit-wise, the cherry and pear trees are coming along nicely. They’re not quite ready for a prune yet, but it won’t be long now. And let’s not forget the new additions – a few laurel bushes and some healthy-looking blueberry bushes have made their way onto the plot, adding even more green to the mix.
Looking ahead to June, the team have their hands full with plans to plant broccoli, leeks, courgettes, beans and parsnips. They’ll also be extending the watering system to keep up with everything that’s growing – because with every visit, it seems like the plot just keeps expanding.
We’re looking forward to seeing what next month brings – there’s definitely something special blooming here.
